Cross Sintra

Luton Airport

London Luton Airport (LLA) have created 150 new jobs following an £11.5 million refurbishment programme that includes two new aircraft engineering and repair hangars and a new airport logistics consolidation centre. The facility is located in former Monarch hangars, and will be home to 2 major airlines.

Background

Cross Group were selected to deliver the unique, patented Sintra HVAC technologies for both hangars.

The Sintra solution is designed to maintain accurate temperature across the two hangar areas, providing maximum comfort levels for the maintenance teams. Additionally the solution supports LLA and their airline clients 2050 net-zero roadmaps.

Challenge & Solution

Challenge

Established in the late 1960s, the Original Monarch hangars presented multiple challenges;

  • Very limited external plant area available on the single landside façade of the buildings
  • Thermal stratification and heat loss through the roof and walls
  • Legacy solution (gas-fired radiant heating) not compatible with LLA net-zero strategy

Solution

Solution entails a range of unique and patented Sintra technologies;

  • Sintra MIX-IND® Mega PAs positioned at L high level, distributing and homogenising temperature throughout the space
  • Packaged air source heat pumps located within the hangars (due to the very limited external plant space).
  • ASHPs are ducted through the wall for fresh air, free cooling and exhaust air
  • Supply air to the space is “dumped” at high level and homogenised by the Sintra Mega PAs

Summary

The Sintra HVAC solutions deliver unapparelled performance, with accurate temperature control across the hangar areas, maximum comfort and substantially reduced running costs as compared with the legacy gas fired solution.
